History of ASOBEXS
The History of a Romantic Story Between Different Generations
A Legacy That Transcends Generations
The Association of Soppo Baptist Ex-Students (ASOBEXS) is the official alumni association of Baptist High School (BHS) Buea, uniting former students from every stage of the institution's evolution—Probationary Training Center (PTC), Elementary Training Center (ETC), Baptist Teachers Training College (BTTC), Baptist Boys Secondary School (BBSS), and Baptist High School (BHS). The Association's history mirrors the remarkable transformation of the school itself, bringing together generations of alumni under one shared identity and purpose.
The Birth of ASOBEXS
ASOBEXS was born from the vision and determination of a small group of former BTTC students who believed in preserving the bonds formed within the Soppo Baptist community. On 18 February 1982, they met at the residence of Mr. Nwanosike E. O. in Munangai Quarters, Buea, with the goal of creating an association that would unite ex-students from all generations of the institution.
Their vision was simple yet powerful—to create one association where every former student could remain connected, contribute to the growth of the school, and build a shared future together.
The Founding Members
The pioneers who laid the foundation of ASOBEXS were:
Mr. Nwanosike E. O.
Dr. Talla Ngarka
Mr. Welang S. T.
Major Ekeke Moses
Mr. Ngole Martin Mebune
Mr. Shey Johnson
Mr. Kwe Michael
Mr. Fomenky E.
Mr. Katu George
Through dedication and perseverance, these visionary alumni promoted the idea across the various generations of former students, earning the support of staff, students, and the growing BBSS alumni community.
Official Formation
Following months of planning and consultation, ASOBEXS officially came into existence in May 1982. During the maiden General Assembly held on 22 May 1982, members adopted the name Association of Soppo Baptist Ex-Students (ASOBEXS) after considering three proposed names. The Association also adopted its enduring motto:
"Truth, Unity and Service."
During this inaugural meeting, the first Constitution was presented, the ASOBEXS emblem was unveiled, and the interim Executive Committee was introduced, establishing the governance framework that continues to guide the Association today.
Growing Across Generations
From its humble beginnings, ASOBEXS steadily expanded its membership by bridging the gaps between alumni of the different school eras. Successive generations embraced the Association, strengthening unity and ensuring that every alumnus had a place within the growing ASOBEXS family.
Leadership gradually transitioned from the founding BTTC generation to BBSS and later BHS alumni, reflecting the Association's commitment to continuity and inclusiveness.
A Global Alumni Network
What began as a small gathering in Buea has evolved into an international alumni network. Today, ASOBEXS has branches across Cameroon—including Buea, Kumba, Bamenda, Tiko, Limbe, Douala, and Yaoundé—as well as diaspora branches in the United Kingdom and North America. The Association also continues to strengthen participation through its active class associations, which remain the foundation of alumni engagement.
A Legacy of Service and Impact
For more than four decades, ASOBEXS has remained committed to supporting BHS Buea through infrastructure development, educational support, mentorship, sports, and community initiatives. Alumni have funded and executed numerous projects, including classrooms, laboratories, sporting facilities, water systems, student amenities, and the landmark 75th Anniversary celebrations in 2025. These achievements reflect the Association's unwavering commitment to giving back to the institution that shaped generations of leaders.
Looking Ahead
ASOBEXS continues to build on the vision of its founders by fostering unity, strengthening alumni engagement, and investing in the future of BHS Buea. Guided by its motto, "Truth, Unity and Service," the Association remains dedicated to preserving its rich heritage while empowering future generations to uphold the legacy of excellence that defines the Soppo Baptist family.
